John A. Schakel, Jr. (Shack) started acting in 2005. Prior to June 2005 John had no acting experience. He answered an ad on the radio for classes and a few weeks later was in his first commercial. Since that time he has been in over 35 projects from TV, commercials, films and documentaries. John has played parts from Judge, to Businessman, to Mafia Don, to Car Salesman.
John has a wide area of life experiences to draw from for his acting. He joined the US Navy in 1963 and retired as a First Class Radioman in 1984. John has traveled all over the Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Persian Gulf. He learned to sport scuba dive in 1972 and became an Advanced Open Water instructor in 1983, teaching a Virginia Beach 4H Scuba Club 12- to 16-year-olds how to scuba dive. He has scuba dived all over the Caribbean, Spain, and New Guinea, as well as in the water swimming with and photographing wild humpback whales and their caves off the coast of the Dominican Republic.
John also lived in Naples, Italy, for 2 years and in Rota, Spain, for 5 years while in the Navy. He was able to travel all over Europe by car and motorcycle while there. After retiring from the Navy he went to work for the US Postal Service as a City Letter Carrier in Tampa, Florida. In 2004 he retired from the Post Office. While he was working for the Post Office he started a small photography business and has been published over 20 times in magazines, text books, advertising, and business reports. He now photographs a lot of 5K, 10K, and marathon runs in the Tampa Bay area.
